Stephen Brodsky is best known as the vocalist and guitar player of the 4 piece band Cave In. Since co-founding the group in 1995, Stephen has also remained active as both solo musician and home recording artist. His debut album Expose Your Overdubs was released on Magic Bullet Records in 1998 and marked the first of many solo projects to follow. Stylistically apart from Cave In, Brodsky's solo compositions sound like "audio diary entries" - both singular and immediate; emphasizing the spirit of a work in progress. Connecting these worlds is an ethereal musical atmosphere most notably displayed on Cave In's Jupiter, a treble-charged expression that expands into a shimmering cosmic soundscape. In 2005 Hydra Head Records released fourBrodsky-related albums, beginning with The Octave Museum in 2006. Now teaming up with Little Black Cloud Records for his first batch of solo material since 2009, Hit or Mystery is the sonic reaction to life in New York after calling Boston home for several years.
Hit or Mystery is perhaps the most lush-sounding and spellbinding material by Stephen Brodsky to date. The subtle quirkiness and compositional brevity of past releases are shadowed here by swimming ambiences and haunting melodies that bridge Robert Plant’s mystic vocal spells to the hypnotic charm of Animal Collective’s Feels . Lyrical themes include the title track highlighting Brodsky's recent move from Boston to New York, Marukami's novel "1Q84" with the song "Dear Luna", and the magical scenes of Terrence Malik's film Days of Heaven. “Your Sweet Love” is a stunning tribute to Lee Hazlewood that builds like a magnificent wave until it bursts and washes itself out into a smooth sheet of glass. Mixed by Phil Palazzolo (Okkervil RIver, St. Vincent, New Pornorgraphers, Roky Erickson,Ted Leo) and mastered by James Plotkin (Tim Hecker, Gary War, Jodis, Khanate, Khlyst, Old, Atomsmasher).
