It isn't everyday that one of our bands get premiered on Stereogum no less on a page that also features Paul McCartney, Eminem, and Nine Inch Nails...no less a band I am in too! The honor is all ours and we are truly grateful for the kind words about Positive No's debut release. Read the review here.
I am very excited to round out this busy year and our five year anniversary as one of the sponsors to the Fall Line Festival here in RIchmond, VA. We also have two artists performing: Stephen Brodsky and Positive No.
I will also be participating in a local record label expo on Saturday, September 7th. It has been put together by the fine folks at WRIR and here are the details taken from their event page.
See ya there!
WRIR hosts a label expo Saturday, 9/7 at The Well (900 W Franklin) from 11am-3pm in conjunction with Fall Line Fest.
Local and regional labels will be in attendance including but not limited to: Funny/Not Funny Records, Vinyl Conflict Records, Forcefield Records, Grave Mistake Records, Aunt Mary Says Records, Subterranea Collective, Little Black Cloud Records, Bad Grrrl Records, Blood & Ink Records, Dialog Records, Spacebomb Records, Mind Rot Records and more!
There will also be a panel discussion with the label heads at 1pm.
Stephen Brodsky is hitting the road late summer, check it out!
This photo comes from my personal vaults. Runhild and I vacationed together in Iceland back in the early 2000s. This is one of my all time favorite photos from the trip.
And a happy / safe fourth of July to all.
LBC is so excited to be one of the festival sponsors this year!
While this event is set up around the general area of Richmond's First Fridays Art Walk (about a one mile area near downtown), we are hoping that the entire Richmond City community will take this special weekend to throw their own shindigs, sales, cook special menus, craft special beers. You know know, snazz things up for a few days in the name of great music, art, food, drink, and fashion. Below is our official press release but I should mention we have two of our bands performing at the festival: Stephen Brodsky and Positive No.
The final 35 copies of the Stephen Brodsky's Hit or Mystery fist press have been put in the webstore. The second press is on the way but these will be regular black vinyl. Order today or miss out on the first press!
Thanks for finding your way to the Little Black Cloud website and giving this a read. We have been a small, independent record label for 5 years and are based out of Richmond, Va.
So much great news to share!
* Thank you Stereogum who were kind enough to say this today "If you are a fan of Cave In, you may be as surprised as I was to hear front man Stephen Brodsky’s new solo EP. A short collection of gentle folk songs, Hit Or Mystery balances a pastoral beauty with a psychedelic vibe all complemented by Brodsky’s soothing voice. There’s a lot of variety here too — “Days Of Heaven” balances acoustic guitar with subtle electronic touches; the single, “Real Surreal Beauty” is a sweet, delicate love song, and “Your Sweet Love” builds Brodsky’s vocals around a gorgeous drone. The whole record sounds beautiful in a fragile and patchwork way — and it’s an unexpected surprise. Listen to
This gorgeous record entitled Hit or Mystery is out next Tuesday (4/16/13) and is available now via our web store. The first 500 records are spectacular two tone vinyl and are going fast. I suspect at this rate they will be gone by the end of the month so if you want the fancy first press, ORDER NOW. You can view a little video on our Facebook page.
Stephen is playing a handful of tour dates with Boris on the East Coast:
* The Universe People's debut LP Go to the Sun is out now! If you missed their live performance on KEXP, you can listen to it here. Speaking of KEXP, Universe People are also playing a neat all day event called Hood to Hood on April 19th. Get the details here. High Five to FinestKiss for this terrific blog post on the band too!
* Newest signing to the label is local RVA band Positive No. This is my new band and we are going back in the studio at the end of May to finish recording our debut EP at J Robbin's studio Magpie Cage. We just posted a stream of the first single "Georgia Purchase Agreement" here. We also have shirts available for sale via the label web store and they come with a digital download for this song as well as our next single called "Powers of Ten".
* I should also mention that Loincloth, yes that band on Southern Lord, also contains three members (AKA all of) Little Black Cloud band Gauchiste, is playing the famous GWAR-B-Q on August 17th in Richmond. Also on the bill? Municipal Waste, Corrosion of Conformity, Pig Destroyer, and Cannabis Corpse. Epic! We don't have many of their second press less so this is your last chance to pick up their slab of wax or a CD-R.
Thanks if you have made it all the way through my news update and thanks for all the support over the years. Our fifth year is shaping up to be our best yet and it is all because of you.
PS: Radio peoplel - I have a 2013 digital label sampler if you want it! Email me.

I am happy to say the day has finally arrived!

The LPs are still on track for 3/19 and come with a FREE super gorgeous horror themed poster too.
Their album is also streaming on Spinner right now.
They have three super cool things on the horizon:
* They play live on KEXP 3/2 at 6:30PM (West Coast time)
* Their record release party is that night at the Rendezvous in Seattle, WA.
* They are opening for a little band called Mudhoney (WOOHOO!) for their album release party show in Seattle, WA on 3/30.
Last but not least, in case you missed their newest video, here it is.
I can't believe how much great news I have to share.
Today Rolling Stone announced the debut single "Real Surreal Beauty" off of Stephen Brodsky's upcoming solo EP for us. Hit or Mystery will be released on vinyl April 16th and it will also be available in the digital form too. Read more about Stephen and his new record here. We also have a Soundcloud page with a litte more info about the release.
On a side note, Cave In (Stephen Brodsky's band) just released a benefit EP for a Hurricane Sandy ravaged recording studio Translator Audio.
Last but not least Stephen will be a touring member of Old Man Gloom who are playing dates in New Zealand, Australia, and Japan with Converge.
Look for more updates about this release very soon!
In other news today, Gauchiste made it onto the Village Voice writer Jordan Mamone's top 10 of 2012 list. Their debut album rests firmly at #5. Congrats Gauchiste who are also in the band Loincloth and made onto the list at #2! ! ! Woah. The Gauchiste LP / CD is still in print and available in our web store.
Filter Magazine wrote about the upcoming Universe People album called Go to the Sun and you can stream their first single there. Their LP will be out on February 19th and it comes with a killer horror movie inspired band poster. Lots more news about this album, plus a new video, will be coming at you soon.
The band has their record release party / show in Seattle on March 2nd at the Rendezvous. I will be there!
One of the world's greatest lyricists and front men, Bob Schick of Honor Role / Coral / Dynami Truths has a comic dedicated to him.
My new band Positive No (ex Dahlia Seed / Tao & the Get Down Stay Down) is playing our second show. It looks like we will be recording our debut single for Little Black Cloud with J Robbins at the end of next month but more news about that coming later. We will also have a band shirt available for sale here next week. It looks like this.
Thanks again for all your support and reading this long list of happy news.

My new band Positive No has two events coming up. We have never played out for the world yet so these are among our very first public performances. I am stil doing Ringfinger but this project has kind of taken over these past 6 months or so. I am trying to think of the last time I played out live in a band besides the demise of Dahlia Seed in 1996. I think it was 2000 while I was in a N.J. group called Down with the Ship featuring drummer super star Dave Witte. (yes, Municipal Waste Dave). Needless to say, it has been a long while and I am STOKED!
We play live on WRIR, Saturday November 10th, somwhere between 5pm and 7pm.
We are also playing our first show on December 20th at Strange Matter in Richmond, VA. We are the opener, the second band is Invisible Hand, and the Babies are the headliner.
The newest label signing is a Seattle, Wa band called Universe People. They just wrapped up a video and will be revealing the details of their album along with the video any minute now. Check out this interview with the trio on Jet City Stream by Marco Collins and get a little hint of what to expect from their release. Thanks for the shout out in the interview gals and guy!
We are still hoping to have the record out by Feb of 2013. Pressing plants have been annoyingly backed up lately so my fingers are crossed that we can meet that release date. Our goal is to include a cool poster inside each LP too so not only does the music rule but the packaging will too!
Stephen Brodsky's EP is being mastered ...again - I know, right? The line of songs has changed one more time but it looks like we have a finalized now and if all goes well we should have it out by March. I PROMISE THIS EP IS WORTH THE WAIT. The music is beyond beautiful and the art / vinyl will sure to please too.
I have been friends with Stephen for a very long time and this new material is my favorite by him. Ever.
The Dunebuggy LP in red and blue vinyl has been a bit of a disaster. We blew out of the first 100 copies on white vinyl and have tried to get another 100 repressed but both versions have showed up warped / unsellable. We salvaged a mere 30 or so copies but that was it. I have no idea when we will get the parts back from the pressing plant but we hope to do a final repress in 2013.
There is a magical band from Richmond called White Laces. A few of them used to be in a Little Black Cloud Records band called Cinemasophia so if you liked that record (how could you not?), be sure to check out White Laces.
One last thing. For those of you affected by Sandy, my heart goes out to you. I have donated to the Red Cross and beg those with even a few dollars to spare to do the same.
NEW LITTLE BLACK CLOUD RECORDS BAND ALERT ! ! !
Once upon a time there was band from Seattle, WA called Welcome on Fatcat Records that I liked a lot. I mean A LOT.
In fact I worshiped their album Sirs so much that I named it my favorite record in 2007. I loved them for their strangely wonderful combination of raw '60s mod garage Rock with the cool Kim Deal side of the Pixies blended in. They delivered an unbelievably interesting combination of something old and new but they sadly faded away. leaving fans like me hoping that someday an offshoot band would sprout up.
Enter Universe People in 2012 and one very happy me.
Welcome's female bass/volcalist player Jo Claxton has a new band and I enjoyed their songs so much I pretty much begged to put them out. I worship their angular female fronted energy that has the power of UK Riot Grrrl bands like Huggy Bear with a post punk dose of The Fall added in. (Also for fans of Delta 5, Country Teasers, Wire, Dolly Mixture, The Stranglers, and The Breeders off the top of my head)
So there it is. We have a new member of the Little Black Cloud Record's family : Universe People!
Their debut album will be released February 12th, 2013 but in the meantime enjoy their band page and follow them on Facebook. A video is in the works right now for their first single so stay tuned for that in weeks to come!
Read on for their official bio:
Once upon a time, Jo Claxton accidentally wandered from her hometown of Sydney, Australia and ended up in Seattle, WA. In 2010, several years and several bands later, she approached Kellie Payne to play bass and sing with her. The idea was to make simple, angular songs based around sweet but stark girl-vocal harmonies. Jo had recorded six demos in her basement in the winter of 2010 to get things rolling. Next, Jo needed some drums, so she contacted the ever-popular drummer about town named Dave Ramm. This was in a vanishingly small window of time when he was not actually in a band, in March 2011. Universe People were born and began playing out in Seattle. Early in 2012, they recorded 10 songs for a full length LP at the all analog Pool Recording Studio, in Portland OR.
Dave also plays drums in Wimps, and Kellie plays drums in Eyes and Teeth.
Don’t mistake Universe People for a Czech-Slovak UFO space cult. But they could melt your brain and take you to outer space if you let them. Let them!
We are releasing a debut single on October 16th by Malhombre, a Richmond, VA artist who is new(ish) to our music community but has been making tremendous music for decades. Read on to learn more!
Malhombre is Frederic Blasco.
Born in Paris in the late ‘60s, he began playing guitar in his teens and has dedicated himself to the musical arts in both France and America (Richmond, VA / NYC) ever since.
In 1997 Blasco began leading a musical project called Blasco Ballroom that for a brief time included Sam Fogarino who would later join Interpol. When the Blasco Ballroom evaporated after the release of their one full length recording , Blasco decided to focus on playing keyboard for other musicians and put his own art aside. He first toured with Cordero, then April March, and eventually landed in Interpol for their 2004 tour. Following his stint with Interpol on the road, he then played with Mikael Jorgensen from Wilco, the Secret Machines, Adam Franklin(Swervedriver), Depedro (solo project of Jairo Zavala from Calexico). He also joined Magnetic Morning, when Sam Fogarino and Adam Franklin decided to flesh out their project.
In short, Frederic Blasco has played with many incredibly talented and respected musicians but after years of letting others take the spotlight, he is ready to step back into it. This leads us to the present tense where Frederic Blasco has recently returned back to Richmond, VA.
Malhombre is his newest creative venture that began as a solo project but more recently has developed into a full band that explores the space between the seductive charm of Serge Gainsbourg and the bleak balladeering of The Tindersticks.
His debut single on Little Black Cloud Records represents the first step in Malhombre’s dazzling musical timeline; before his present band line up was secured. Here a gifted group of guest musicians have helped him flesh out his first two songs “Musique Rock” and “Fini”, and it is these recordings that grace the two sides of this single.
The hypnotic A side entitled “Musique Rock” was inspired by the 1999 French film Une Liaison Pornagraphique and features April March on vocals. Here she sings entirely in French with a delicate melancholy tone and to round out this song beyond guitar, Steve Weiss drums (he has also played with AM and Depedro).
“Fini” on the AA side is a smouldering, breathy duet sung in French and English and takes place between Blasco and Melissa Auf der Maur of Hole /Smashing Pumpkins / MAdM. The music also features several friends of Blasco who have played with a myriad of bands such as Cracker and Sparklehorse. As the title “Fini” suggests, a love affair has ended and the man has drunk his way out of her heart.
Together these two songs celebrate a classic sexy ‘60s French ballad style that sounds modern yet timeless. They describe affairs of the heart but avoid the trappings of a sappy love song.
The 7” will be limited to 500 copies on deep red opaque vinyl and comes housed in a handsome die-cut sleeve designed by Kenneth Close. Artwork also includes a Slept In Beds image taken by Nicholas Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeas).

Straddling the stillness and razor-sharp menace of the music, this is a short film for "Choeur II," by Gauchiste member Tomas Phillips and filmmaker Dean King.
Hello and a happy Summer to you,
The best news I can offer is that I am employed again and a new full time job means I can afford to put out new records again, YAY! And speaking of new records, there will be at least two coming out this year.
The first of these two releases is a 7" single mostly sung in French by the Richmond, Va artist Malhombre. It features guest vocals by two amazing women, April March on one side and Melissa Auf der Maur on the other. There will be lots more information about this release in the weeks to come but first we are trying to finalize the artwork. Like all of our releases, the cover art is as important to us as the music. Our goal is to have the single come with a hand stamped envelope nestled into the front cover that will contain a two sided insert. The front will be a spectacular image taken by Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) from his Slept in Beds photograph series and the back will contain all the details about the recordings.
Here is a picture of the man himself, meet Malhombre.
This tremendous photo is by PJ Sykes.
The other record coming out this year is a 12" EP from Stephen Brodsky, frontman to the band Cave In. Right now we have 5 songs mixed and ready to go but there could end up being one more snuck into the line up. I should have an update about this shortly. In other Steve happenings, he recently played a show with the legendary band Codeine in Brooklyn. Check out this video of Stephen playing the aptly titled song "Cave In" with Codeine; Stephen's apparant enthusiasm for sharing the stage with them is pricess.
In other major news, all three members of Gauchiste are now members of the mighty Loincloth (a Southern Lord Records band) . Tannon Penland was already a member of both bands but just last month it was announced that Tomas Phillips and Craig Hilton have also joined forces and this means we can expect some Loincloth live dates in the Fall. YES! And do to so many requests we have done one last repress of the Gauchiste CD in the metal tin. They are available from our webstore right now and Cobraside Distro should have them back in stock lthe week of the 23rd.
Also do to high demand, we did one more limited repress of the Dunebuggy LP. This second press of 100 feature a change in the color vinyl (was white); 50 in blue and 50 in red. Collect all three and feel super patriotic! Our web store should have these two new colors in about two weeks. I will announce it here when they are in stock. This also means our distributor Cobraside will have them in a few weeks too.
A happy belated birthday to Runhild Gammelsæter! And what could be a more appropriate news story on her big day than physicists finding the elusive particle believed to be the key to understanding the universe? If you are familiar with Runhild's debut solo release Amplicon you will understand why the date of this discovery couldn't be better.
Last but not least my new band Positive No has finished a 5 song and we have a 6th one in the works now. This means we are about half way towards having enough material to record a full lenth and should have enough songs to start playing out by late Summer. We now have a permanent drummer, Will Thompson who had been playing with Thao With the Get Down Stay Down. We are still on hunt for a permanent bass player (hence why we haven't played out yet) but hopefully we will secure the final piece of this puzzle soon. This does mean I have been a little distracted from working on Ringfinger material but I do plan on recording an EP of new material in the near future.
Over and out,
This is a Little Black Cloud Records first and I am thrilled to finally offer a music video for one of our artists. The video was shot by myself and my better half Kenneth who does all the graphic design for the label. It was animated and edited by Jason Quarles and I deeply thank Kenneth and Jason for all their help and hard work as well as Gauchiste for giving me their blessing to experiment with visuals put to one of their songs.
Our goal was to create something that wasn’t filled with stereotypical images typically associated with heavy music. The idea was to study our surroundings and discover the weight, beauty, and unearth darkness in surprising places like delicate orchidaceae that upon closer investigation look monstrous and erotic or a simple swinging rope curled accidentally like a noose.
The song viols comes from the self titled Gauchiste album that came out earlier this year on the label. It is available on CD, LP, and the digital format.

Did you see the line up this year for the amazing Hopscotch Music Festival this September? Not only are acts like Roots, Built To Spill, Yo La Tengo, Sunn o))), Liars, Zola Jesus, etc playing (...the list goes and on and o) but tucked at the end of this tremendous list of talented people are two people near and dear to my heart; Craig Hilton and Tomas Phillips.
Those two gentlemen also happen to represent 2/3 of Gauchiste and I am so happy they will be performing this year.
See ya in September!
Hey indie Pop fans, the Dunebuggy LP / Digitial recording is out TODAY. You can buy the record via all the usual digital webstores like iTunes or Amazon and if your local record shop doesn't stock the LP for some reason, tell them to order it from the good people at Cobraside.
The Friday night Dunebuggy record release party was a blast. Thanks to all who came out to support the event, Dunebuggy for letting me be a part of this record, Hi-Fi for letting us take over the room for a few hours, and Kenny / Paulie for donating their DJing skills. The night felt like a reunion of sorts, not just because Dunebuggy was a band that came and went in the '90s and this is the first time many people are hearing all of these songs but for all the old familiar faces who came out to say hello and celebrate this release.
My head spins when I think about all the incredible friends and talented people who were all there on Friday. There were so many of my creative heroes in one place; lots of great writers, label /record store/distro people, and holy cow - the musicians! Sorry to get all mushy here but when I think of how lucky I am to know such inspiring people, it is hard not to gush. I may be in the occasional band or run a small label but at the end of the day, I am a music fan first and foremost. Check out this list of bands that were represented in one way or another on Friday. If you grew up on the East Coast in the past three decades loving indie music, I think you will understand why I am so honored to have so many of these people all in the same room at the same time.
Dunebuggy, Dahlia Seed, Positive No, Merel, Radio 4, Garden Variety, Nolan Gate, Coheed & Cambria, Rorschach, Teen Idles / Double-O / 3/ Bert was in too many bands to list them all (HA!), Cave In, Old Man Gloom, and Ancient Sky to name a few.
Here is a picture of Keith Renna (Dunebugggy drummer), me (Dunebuggy guest vocalist), and Jon Procopio (Dunebuggy singer/guitar player). We haven't all been in the same room together at the same time in probably 12 to 15 years so needless to say, Friday wasn't just a record release party, it was like seeing family.
